Healthcare on Wheels is a community health initiative dedicated to improving access to free or affordable healthcare in rural and under-served communities. Its mobile health units are run by certified volunteer practitioners from a wide range of medical specialisations, strengthening healthcare for people in rural India.
Many underprivileged families, rural communities and slum dwellers lack health education and cannot risk a day’s wages to visit a hospital, and primary medical facilities are often far away. The programme takes a two-fold approach: it brings quality healthcare within easy reach, and it builds health awareness so that people seek care when they need it.
What the work focuses on
- Reaching the unreached with mobile medical units matched to local needs.
- Strengthening mobile outreach and the availability of primary healthcare.
- Emergency response vehicles and ambulances for reproductive and child health.
- Public-private collaboration and policy attention to meet growing demand.
- Helping people become digitally active healthcare citizens.
